PORTERDALE — Today will be the last day on the job for City Manager Tom Fox, who has accepted the position of public safety director for Social Circle.

Fox, who has worked for Porterdale for 13 years, was presented a resolution recognizing his contributions to the city at the council’s Monday night meeting. Mayor Bobby Hamby expressed the council’s thanks to Fox “for a job well done.”

Fox will be succeeded by interim city manager Frank Sherrill under a three-month contract while the council looks for a permanent replacement.

Mayor to request help with sewers

The council unanimously agreed to authorize Hamby to request assistance from the Northeast Georgia Regional Council in applying for a grant for sewer improvements in the town. NGRC will also be enlisted to help coordinate and administer any grant funds received for the sewer repairs.

City clerk Lynn Rodriguez reported that property tax collections are about 75 percent complete. Taxes were due Dec. 20, and Rodriguez said payments continue to trickle in.

Those who do not pay within a specified grace period will be subject to property tax liens. Fox said that the city has granted up to 60 days grace period in the past.

Animal vaccinations, registration available at Depot in April

Councilwoman Linda Finger proposed two dates for animal registration and vaccination as required by Porterdale ordinance — from 1 to 5 p.m. April 10 and 17 at the Depot.

Finger said she has arranged for the volunteer services of a local veterinarian to provide vaccinations at a reduced cost.

Last year, the first year the ordinance requiring pets in Porterdale to be registered, Finger said more than 200 animals were registered.

Organizations donate to repair Christmas star

The council also voted unanimously to accept a donation of $590 from the Porterdale Woman’s Club and The Friends of Porterdale. The funds were used to make repairs to the Christmas star atop the Porterdale water tower.

In addition, the council recognized the contribution of about a dozen large bags of aluminum cans that were donated to the town’s Christmas decorations fund by teenage brothers Michael Hobbs and James Hobbs.
