  • Test passed
MACON — The first quarter of the Class A state semifinal game between Wesleyan and Taylor County looked like a typical Wolves game. After taking as much as a 19-point lead in the second quarter, the final three quarters did not. However, Wesleyan managed to maintain its poise after receiving the sternest test from a Class A opponent all season, rallying after the Taylor County pulled as close as 10 points to finally pull away for a 66-44 win Wednesday at the Macon Centreplex.
  • Wesleyan boys roll over Wilcox Co. into finals
MACON — Wilcox County ended Wesleyan’s hopes of winning back-to-back Class A state football championships, knocking off the Wolves in the quarterfinals last fall en route to winning the title itself. On Wednesday night, Wesleyan got its revenge.
  • Berkmar’s Thompson resigns
The same week the last of five Gwinnett head football coaching openings was filled, another one came open. Berkmar’s John Thompson resigned Wednesday morning after two seasons leading the Patriots’ football program. Thompson’s decision means Gwinnett will have six football teams with new head coaches next season.
  • Local teams ready for Final Four
It has become commonplace for a Norcross basketball team to take the floor at the Arena at Gwinnett Center for the Class AAAAA state Final Four. However, when action tips off for this year’s semifinals today at 4 p.m., it won’t be the Norcross boys. Instead, the Blue Devils girls team will be making their Final Four debut against Westlake.
  • GAC boys, girls looking for rare double titles
It is a rare feat for the boys and girls basketball teams at one school to each take home a state championship in the same season. While Wesleyan came into Wednesday’s Class A state semifinals at the Macon Centreplex with a chance to do so for the second time in the last three years, Greater Atlanta Christian will have its opportunity to pull off a double title when the Spartans girls and boys tip off in the Class AA semis this evening. It’s the first time since 1972 that both the GAC boys and girls teams are in the Final Four in the same season.
  • HAMMOCK: Hoops refs need upgrade
Two very good boys basketball teams played an emotional thriller in last Saturday’s Class AAAAA quarterfinals at West Georgia. But the efforts of the Norcross and Milton boys didn’t generate nearly as much message board fodder as the referees.

  • Hawks, Norcross lead region honors
Mill Creek’s Moneshia Simmons and Norcross’ Jeremy Lamb were selected as players of the year by the Region 7-AAAAA coaches, who announced their season-ending awards Wednesday.
  • Bisher: Cox better brace for unwanted fuss
Guess you heard, Bobby Cox is retiring. As in, “Bobby Cox, who is retiring after this season, blah, blah and blah.” Wonder if he might not like to think that over again. That isn’t like the Braves skipper to set himself up for the most annoying season in his managing career. What he didn’t realize is that every time his name is mentioned, he’ll have new title — Bobby (Who Is Retiring) Cox. The Retiring Bobby Cox. Bobby Comma Retiring Cox, until the last leaf has fallen from the trees in October.

  • JHS Soccer finishes week strong after rainy start
Last Tuesday was set to be a crucial night in region play for the Devils and Lady Devils, but Mother Nature had other plans as both matches were postponed until Saturday, March 27. Both team were able to take the field Thursday against non-region opponent Griffin and Saturday against South-Atlanta.
  • Furman Bisher: Spring training is good for the soul
The sun bathes the body gently with its springtime rays. This is the one time of the year when sweat has a fragrance of its own. This was Casey Stengel’s time of the year, even when he had nothing better to look forward to than the Mets. He’d lean on the bar at his hotel until there was nobody left to listen to his croaking voice.
  • JHS Soccer looking strong
The first official week of soccer is in the books, and the Devils and Lady Devils are both looking strong. The season opener took both teams to Newton County on Tuesday to take on the Rams. The Lady Devils played a tight first half, going into half-time with a 1-0 lead. They came out in the second half and took advantage of weaknesses in the Lady Rams' defense. The Lady Devils were able to score two more goals, including a penalty kick from Hannah Kline to end the game with a 3-0 win.
  • Grand slam gives Red Devils win over Upson-Lee
The skies around Butts County may not be saying spring, yet, but at Wallace Field the Red Devils of the Jackson High School baseball team have laced up their cleats, Homer Williams has cut the field, and the crack of bat against ball and the thud of ball against glove leather is heard repetitively, proclaiming, “Baseball season is here.”
  • JHS Track teams prepare for 2010 teams
Conditioning and strength training is well underway both on the track and in the weight room as coaches Eddie Snell, Jeff Myricks and Beau Garrett prepare the Jackson High School boys and girls' track teams for competition.
  • Furman Bisher: Ah, Spring, and retirement on the wing
Look, baseball managers have retired before. Some not of their own choosing. Take Casey Stengel, for instance. Bet you didn't realize that the Yankees fired him, and he didn't go with a grin on his face. None of them left like Connie Mack.
  • Lady Devils, Red Devils kick off soccer season
The JHS soccer program is now officially into the 2010 season. Last Wednesday, both the girls and boys teams welcomed the Chargers of Central Macon to town in a preseason exhibition match. For both teams, the season officially kicks off on Tuesday, February 23.
